GEORGE BERNARD SHAW ORIGINAL PROGRAMS



1. Souvenir program for George Bernard Shaw's address sponsored by the Academy of Political Science at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, April 11, 1933. The climax of Shaw's 1933 world tour was his first ever visit to North America. When he arrived in New York in early April, more than 200 reporters turned out to greet him. The highlight of his trip to the United States was his only major address,  The Future of Political Science in America, which was broadcast on nationwide radio. "Finding myself in an opera house with such a magnificent and responsive audience," Shaw began, "I feel an irresistible temptation to sing." What followed was one of the longest and most brilliant speeches he ever gave, a searing and perceptive commentary on all things American. A rare souvenir program from this event in excellent condition, with a handsome inset paper photograph of Shaw. Eight pages. Dimensions eight by five and a half inches. $100.00

Rare first run program from the October 1905 Royal Court Theatre production of George Bernard Shaw's Man and Superman, directed by Harley Granville Barker, who starred as John Tanner, and featuring his wife Lillah McCarthy as Ann Whitefield. Large ads on last page for the premieres of Granville Barker's The Voysey Inheritance and Shaw's Major Barbara. Dimensions ten by seven and a half inches. 3. The Doctor's Dilemma. 1907. Rare program from the original Barker- Vedrenne Royal Court production with Ben Webster as Consuelo Ridgeon and Granville Barker as Dubedat.
